February 14, 2005Philadelphia punk rockThe day started around 12:15 when I departed for the great city of Philadelphia to see an old college friend that I haven't seen in way too long. The excitement started on the way down, when a Tornado red GTI passed me on the Pennsylavania turnpike. For the most part I'm a pretty cautious driver, but sometimes I go a little nutty. Especially when theres other Volkwagens involved. There was a girl driving and a guy in the passengers seat. After some crazy high speed shannanigans, we rolled next to each other cracked a smile, waived and went our separate ways, but all in all it was alot of fun. Skip ahead to about 5:00, after I fought Philly traffic and managed to find a parking spot reasonably close to Andy's apt. in the city. Andy, Kelly and I decided we needed to try Philly cheese steaks from Jim's. Jim's has a reputation in Philly for having the best cheese steaks, and from what I hear you haven't had a real "cheese steak" until you've had one in Philly, so why not have one that is crem' de la crem'. After a long wait in line we all sat down with our cheese steaks. After munching them down we all came to the conclusion that it really wasn't anything special. Obviously a step above the steak ums my mom cooked for me as a kid, but nothing super mouth watering. Maybe I just need to try a cheese steak in Chicago to fully appreciate it. 7:00- So we're finally at the First Unitarian Church in Philly. The first band to play was Philadelphia's own The Loved Ones Opening bands aren't supposed to be good. These guys were awesome and I can't wait to see them again. I hadn't heard them before tonight, but I plan to pick up there cd sometime in the near future. After that we were treated to None More Black, how can you go wrong when your line up consists of two people that were in Kid Dynamite? Especially when one of those people is Jason Shevchuk, who's raspy vocals can't be mistaken for anyone elses. $10 later I have there CD, No More Black: File Under Black and it's going to get lots of play in the weeks to come. The night could have ended there and the $12 ticket price would have been well worth it, but we were only half done. The Unseen was the next band to take the stage. I really wasn't sure what to expect out of this band from Boston. They attracted the "gutter punk" crowd and usually I'm not into that type of music, but they really suprised me. They put on an awesome show and did a great cover of Black Flag's "Rise above." Finally, after all that I got to see the band I was down there to see, Strike Anywhere. This was my third time seeing them and they were great as usual. If you asked me to name three songs before the show that I wanted to hear, I would have said, "Cassandratic Equation", "Laughter In A Police State", and "To The World." They played all three and I couldn't be happier. I had a great time tonight. I got to see an old friend that I should visit more often and I'm really glad Kelly was able to make it. I always have a good time when I hang out with her. I almost forgot, so we're walking from where we parked to the church. All of us were cold because we just had t-shirts on, because no one wanted to wear a coat into the show. So we had this crazy discussion about borrowing or renting a coat from a homeless person. Cruel? yes, but it sounded funny at the time. Well, it couldn't have been more than 2 mintes after that, that we passed the inevitable homeless guy on the street. Shortly after passing he yells "hey lady....get a coat" to Kelly. Needless to say that was worth a good laugh.
