March 2, 2005Put your boots on....the $hit is getting deepI always find the "war on iPod" an interesting one. For some reason every other MP3 player manufacturer thinks they can de-throne the iPod as MP3 player of choice. I'm not here to say that it can't be done, but I will say that it will be a very hard battle for any manufacturer. Let's not waste anytime though in getting to the most recent news on the iPod front. As many of you may or may not know Apple recently introduced there iPod shuffle which seems to be extremely successful. However, more recently they have introduced a new 6GB iPod mini. Now enter Creative Labs, a great company, although lately they haven't really lived up to there name, developing iPod and iPod mini knock-offs in the form of the Zen Touch and Zen Micro. Just yesterday, Creative responded to Apple's new 6GB iPod mini, by dropping pricing on there 4GB micro to match Apple's price and also announced a 6GB model, also matching Apple's price. Anyway what really spurred this pathetic rant is an article I read tonight. What really caught my attention were the quotes from the CEO of Creative. Please see for yourself. "'With the introduction of the Zen Micro 4GB MP3 player at the incredibly low price of only $179, we offer superior features and more than twice the song capacity of the 4GB iPod mini at a substantially better price" Please note that the $179 price is after a $20 mail in rebate offer. Superior features?? Care to elaborate?? Twice the song capacity?? This really confused me. Last time I checked no matter what 4 GB you stuff your MP3's on, its still the same amount of space. Sim Wong Hoo, CEO of Creative, continued to assert that the company is on the offensive rather than playing defense How exactly is responding to Apple's new offerings and price drops an offensive move?? Had they done this two weeks ago I would have given them an "A" for effort but they didn't, despite the rumors stirring on some Apple rumor sites. With the lack of excitement lately I felt the need to rant about something. Thanks for taking the time to read. Posted by Chris Boredom at March 2, 2005 11:03 PM Commentsfreakin' apple geeks...
